CHAPTER TWELVE

Neo's office was nothing like I'd expected. It was a strangely empty space. Only a sleek grey desk and a few spartan shelves to fill it up. It was also incredibly gloomy, with a small lamp struggling to make up for the lack of a window.

“You need a new office,” I muttered. “One with actual windows.”

“Windows are a terrible weakness in a secure room.” Neo brushed past me, heading straight for the desk.

“I thought you were researching in here?” I asked, curiously peering at the few titles on the shelves.

“I was.”

“Then why are there so few books?”

He just frowned and turned away. “There's only one book of consequence. A journal written by one of Marcus's disciples shortly after his father stole the artefact. Even that tome is practically useless to us now. Our answers lay in other avenues.”

He pressed a button under the desk and a tray slid out, revealing a sleek silver laptop, which he flipped open.

“Your Internet may hold clues I've been missing.”

I smirked at him. “It's not my Internet, it's just the Internet. And we won't start there. The Assembly will probably have more information than what's available to the general public, anyway.”

He gave me a single raised brow, daring me to make anything of it as he pulled out the chair and waved me into it.

“What am I looking for?” I asked, pulling the laptop closer and opening the browser.

A few quick taps and I was into the side of the web only used by demons. A few more clicks had me logged into the archives of the Assembly. Thousands of years of digitised records there for the taking. Nothing was off limits to the Prime and her assistant.

Sometimes, being Lilith's PA was the best.

“Marcus. Find anything you can about him. He's a Greed. Sub-caste⁠—”

“Fraudulence,” I finished for him, giving him my best ‘I told you so’ smirk. “Yes, they have a whole file right here. Last seen in Rio.”

Neo ran a hand through his hair in exasperation. “So easy,” he grumbled. “Do you have anything more precise? Combing a city that large for one demon is a chore.”

“Nope, but there is a list of known associates.” I scrolled through the names. “It's quite long. Most of them probably won't know anything useful.”

But I could see Neo glaring at the names as though he were committing them to memory.

“I'll have my people investigate them. Some were known to me already… others are… unexpected.”

I tapped at the mousepad. “I'm sending out a note to some of Lilith's contacts too. Old resistance members who owe her for giving them their showings. They'll keep an eye out in case he pops up anywhere else.” I finished the quick message, hit send, and then went to go back to reading about Marcus, but Neo pulled my hand away.

“Enough for now. These leads will keep my people busy for a while. In the meantime, I told you, I have a date planned.”

I smirked. “I thought our date was 'crushing our enemies?'“

His expression didn't change, but I could sense his amusement down the bond.
